Research: Despoina Trasanidou’s research interests focus on design of high-throughput strategies for base and prime editing of hematopoietic stem cells to treat hematological disorders. She has developed first-in-class CRISPR-based gene-editing tools and optimized these employing rational protein engineering as well as directed evolution for applications in human cells & plants.

CV: Despoina has joined Sanquin Research as of September 1, 2024. She has worked previously at the Department of Hematology of St Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, USA where she worked on gene editing strategies. She worked as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow Genetic and Protein Engineering in a joint project of the Biophysics Laboratory of Florida State University and the Structural Biology Department of St. Jude  Children’s Research Hospital, USA. Despoina worked as a PhD Researcher (Genetic & Protein Engineering) in the Microbiology Laboratory of Wageningen University on the design of CRISPR & anti-CRISPR tools to engineer human & bacterial cells for applications in medicine & biotechnology.
